When it comes to stress management, we are often told that resilience is key. But what is resilience, and how can it help with getting stress under control?
Let’s start with some definitions
According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, resilience is “the ability to be happy, successful, etc. again after something difficult or bad has happened”. Merriam Webster describes resilience as “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.”
So, when it comes to stress resilience, it is the ability to quickly recover from stressful events but also turning stress into a force for good. Positive stress can keep us going for longer and improve our performance whereas negative stress usually does the opposite.
Building resilience has many benefits, especially for our health. Being able to cope with stress well will lead to leading a longer and healthier life. It is also highly beneficial for our mental wellbeing. Being stress resilient is associated with lower levels of depression and a greater satisfaction with life overall.
How to build resilience
In a previous blog post we have shared 8 ways you can build resilience. In general, a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition and plenty of exercise provides a good basis for your resilience.
It is also never too late to start. Resilience is not something that you have to build before a certain age, or it’s too late. You can start at any time in your life. But of course, the sooner you start the more benefits you’ll reap. It’s like the old Chinese saying: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”
