You’re learning to concentrate on the present
When we stress, we either worry about past mistakes or what things are going to go wrong in the future. We zone out from the present. Taking your mind back to the present moment regularly can help to put things into perspective. You can concentrate on taking actions now that will avoid those things you worry about in the future. Alternatively, you can do things now that can correct past mistakes.
You become more aware of your body’s needs
Rather than pushing yourself beyond your limits, mindfulness helps you to check in with your body to see when you need to slow down or take a break. This helps you to cope better with the demands of a stressful job. You will also be able to notice aches or pains sooner and take appropriate action.
You’ll be able to get “into the zone”
Rather than being constantly side-tracked with triggers from your environment, you learn to focus and get “into the zone” to concentrate on the job at hand. This will help you to be more productive and get more done, thus lowering your stress.
You’ll be more aware of your thoughts
The initial response to a situation doesn’t have to be one of panic. As you practice mindfulness you are more aware of thoughts coming into your head and you’ll learn how to deal with them. Situations that previously caused you stress, might no longer feel stressful at all.
Mindfulness can improve your physical wellbeing
As a consequence of experiencing less stress through mindfulness practice you will be secreting less of the stress hormone cortisol. This in turn will improve your blood pressure and your immune system.
